The author of "Jaws," Peter Benchley, read an article about a great white shark that had been caught off of Long Island. He pondered what it might be like if a similar shark came near a beach and did not leave. Inspiration was born and he later released his most successful book, "Jaws."

5. Long Island is legally a peninsula

In 1985, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled by a 9-0 decision that Long Island is legally a peninsula because the East River that separates Manhattan from Brooklyn and Queens was not deep enough to enable most ships to pass. It is, however, still an island by any other definition as it is surrounded by water on all sides.

In 1958, staff members at Brookhaven National Laboratory were working on events for their upcoming Visitor’s Day. The first movement to permanently break away from New York State occurred in 1896 out of frustration with politicians in Albany. In 2009, the Suffolk County legislature formed a committee to look into the possibility of seceding, however it did not happen. If it had happened and Long Island became its own state, it would be the 13th most populated state. It would be smaller than Delaware, but larger than Rhode Island.

8. It was once called “The Island of Nassau”

In 1693, New York’s General Assembly announced that Long Island had changed its name to "The Island of Nassau” to honor the King of England. The change in name was mostly ignored and did not stick. The name Nassau was later given to a county on Long Island.
