1. Origin of the name Nassau County
Nassau was actually once the name of the entire island, not just the county. The Island was given the name Nassau after the Dutch Prince William of Nassau of the House of Orange-Nassau. The name Nassau was later removed for the entire island and given to the county only. The orange and blue county colors are also from the House of Orange-Nassau.
2. Nassau by the numbers
Nassau county is one of four counties that occupy Long Island, along with Suffolk, Queens, and Brooklyn. It consists of two cities, three towns, 64 incorporated villages, and approximately 60 unincorporated villages.

3. Nassau County seat
In November 1898, Mineola was selected over Hicksville and Hempstead to be the county seat. Four acres of land were donated for the county buildings from Garden City.
4. A tale of two cities
In 1917, the village of Glen Cove was given a city charter and thus became separate from the Town of Oyster Bay. In 1922, Long Beach became a city, thus becoming independent from the Town of North Hempstead. These are the only two cities in Nassau County.
5. Nassau and its Gold Coast
From the early 1900s until the early 1930s, several farms on the North Shore were made into extravagant estates for wealthy New Yorkers. Before World War II, much of Nassau County consisted of farms, especially on the eastern side of the county. After the war, many residents of New York City headed to Nassau for a more suburban lifestyle. In 1947, William Levitt built his first planned community in Nassau, which later became known as Levittown.
