1. New Jersey has many historical firsts

2. Origin of the name New Jersey
In 1664, James, Duke of York gave land to Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret. To honor Carteret, the charter named the area New Jersey, because he was born on the island of Jersey in the English Channel. He also served as Lieutenant Governor of the island for many years.

3. Thomas Edison's lab was in New Jersey
Thomas Edison had his laboratory in New Jersey at Menlo Park. It was there that he invented the light bulb, the phonograph, and the motion picture projector. He later was given the nickname the “Wizard of Menlo Park.”

6. Is it really "The Garden State"
"The Garden State" is a nickname for New Jersey that not everyone felt was appropriate. In 1954, Governor Robert Meyner was bothered that the state legislature approved a bill to put “The Garden State” on car license plates. He did not feel that residents of New Jersey identified more with gardening or farming than other industries or occupations. He went on to veto the bill, however the legislature overrode the veto and the bill passed.
7. New Jersey had the first Miss America pageant
The first Miss America pageant occurred on the Atlantic City boardwalk in 1921. The winner was awarded a prize of $100 and a Golden Mermaid trophy.

New Jersey has a volcano in Sussex County. Scientists believe the Beemerville volcano has been inactive for approximately 440 million years. The real estate around the volcano has become very popular with houses built right to the summit.
