1. Origin of the name Suffolk County

Suffolk County was named after Suffolk, England, which borders other areas in England whose names have also been used for locations in the tri-state area. These include Norfolk to the north and Essex to the south.

2. Suffolk County has history in the American Revolution

Much of Suffolk County was occupied by the British during the American Revolution. In Brookhaven, the development of the Committee of Observation was led by William Floyd, who signed the Declaration of Independence and is the namesake of the William Floyd Parkway. The committee later distributed "Association" papers, which were basically patriot roll calls and signed by men in the area who vowed to support the move for independence from the British.

3. Suffolk was one of New York's original counties

Suffolk was one of the twelve original counties established in New York State in 1683. Its boundaries have never changed significantly since then. However, it used to border Queens to the east before the establishment of Nassau County in 1899.

Suffolk County includes the most eastern point of both Long Island and the city's metropolitan area. It is the largest of the four counties on Long Island (including Brooklyn and Queens) and is the second largest of 62 counties in New York State. It measures approximately 86 miles long and approximately 26 miles wide. 

5. Significance of the Fire Island Lighthouse

The Fire Island Lighthouse in Suffolk served as an essential landmark for many trans-atlantic ships that were entering the New York Harbor during the early 1900s. It was the first sight of land for many immigrants who were entering the country for the first time.

6. The Great South Bay Bridge

In 1954, The Great South Bay Bridge became the first causeway bridge to operate in Suffolk. It had only one lane in each direction (North/South). It goes across the Great South Bay to Captree Island and has a main span of approximately 600 feet, with a boat clearance of 60 feet.

7. Suffolk is the Lighthouse capital

Suffolk County has more lighthouses than any other county in the country. Fifteen of the original twenty six are still standing. Eight of the fifteen are in Southold, giving the township the most lighthouses of any township in the country.

8. There have be talks of splitting Suffolk County

There have been talks about the possibility of dividing Suffolk into two separate counties. The name Suffolk would remain and would consist of the western part of the current county. A new county named Peconic County would be established and it would consist of the eastern towns of East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton and Southold, plus the Shinnecock Indian Reservation.
