The largest park in Westchester is named the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation and is a vast 4,315 acres. This makes it approximately five times larger than Central Park in Manhattan. Westchester has a total of 50 parks that are a combined 18,000 acres of green space for everyone to enjoy.
2. Westchester has many historical firsts
Westchester has several firsts, including the first elevator company (The Otis Elevator Company in Yonkers); the first self-made female millionaire (Madame C. J. Walker of Irvington, who is also the first African American female millionaire); the first American golf club (the 1888 St. Andrew’s Golf Club in Hastings); the first synthetic plastic, Bakelite (synthesized in 1909 by Leo Baekeland in Yonkers); and the first parkway (the Bronx River).

3. Howard Stern started out in Westchester
His first job on radio was in Briarcliff Manor. The “shock jock” started as a disc jockey and was paid $4 an hour. Stern started there after finishing college in 1976.

He now spends almost the entire day in solitary confinement at a maximum security prison.

6. Ripley’s Believe It or Not
Robert Ripley, who created the show Ripley’s Believe It or Not, lived in Mamaroneck. He lived in a 28 room mansion that was located on island off of Taylor’s Lane in Rye Neck. He was known to throw many extravagant parties that would be attended by many stars of the time, including Babe Ruth.
7. Westchester was a short lived home to George Washington
George Washington stayed at the Elijah Miller House in North White Plains. The house on Virginia Road still stands today. He stayed there in the time leading up to the American victory at the Battle of White Plains in 1776.
8. The Kennedy's had a home in Westchester
John F. Kennedy authored his 1940 college thesis at his family's home on Pondfield Road in Bronxville. Though the family had multiple homes at the time, they lived there on and off from 1929 to 1942.

9. Norman Rockwell lived in Westchester
